Special Interview with Lucky spinning Co., Ltd.

2010 Spring

Lucky Spinning Co Ltd has currently installed 55 VORTEX861 machines in Thailand.
‘Lopil’ yarns, a ‘Brand’ by Lucky spinning has promoted a widespread message on the positive attributes of VORTEX spun yarns to the textile fashion industry.
Lucky operates in the same premises 45,234 ring spindles and 6,760 rotors.
Currently Lucky Spinning manufactures about 150 M.tons of Yarn per day. Mr. D. Devadas, COO & Group President shared his views on this futuristic technology with us.

Do you see a Growth in the acceptability of VORTEX Yarns by the leading ‘Brands’?
Mr. Devadas

The answer is ‘YES’. ‘You don’t buy clothes - you buy an identity’: The fashion industry is driven by this phrase.
Value of a product is enhanced by its differentiation from the existing products.
One can find and realize a visible qualitative difference when Lopil Yarn is used in their fabrics.
We have made significant R&D Efforts in collaboration with fabric manufacturers (knitters/weavers/dyers) and presented the resultant products to international ‘Brands’.
They have accepted the ‘Lopil’ products as they have ‘experienced’ the qualitative ‘difference’.
The supply chain integration effort by Lucky Spinning has assured them of the availability of the ‘Lopil’ products on a continuous basis.
Japanese and European Brands started gaining confidence in fabrics made using ‘Lopil yarn’ in Thailand and converted into apparels in ASEAN region.
International brands have approved our products from knitters & dyers in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Please give your overall understanding of VORTEX compared to ring and rotor spinning systems?
Mr. Devadas

We have compared all the three major spinning systems namely Ring spinning, OE and VORTEX technology in our mills and found VORTEX technology to be better in many aspects.
The most important advantage of Air VORTEX spinning is that the yarn geometry is approaching Ring yarn and all leading ends of fibres coming out of roller drafting zone are tucked into the core of the yarn structure, thus reducing hairiness.
We have practically observed this with a comfortable count range of Ne 1/20s to Ne 1/40s.
In this medium count range which occupies over 70% of apparel segment, Ring spinning would be replaced by VORTEX spinning machines in the next decade similar to the shift for Rotor spinning from ring spinning for coarser counts.
What are the new products developed in VORTEX?
Mr. Devadas

In the career wear (school uniforms / industrial wear) polyester blended VORTEX spun yarns are accepted due to its low pilling nature over longer period of usage and repeated washes.
For same reasons sweaters from acrylic spun yarns of VORTEX is a growing segment.
The synthetic spun yarns blended with function oriented technological fibres such as high wicking, temperature controlled, phase change material, fire retardant etc., are growing significantly.
Automobile industry uses VORTEX spun yarns due to its high abrasion resistance. We are also developing synthetic fabrics for leading sportswear brands using ‘Lopil’ (VORTEX) spun yarns which results in apparels with better breathability and appearance than fabrics made out of filament yarns.

What do you think about challenges and future of VORTEX spinning system?
Mr. Devadas

While selling VORTEX yarn we face resistance from the customers as this is not identical to the ring spun yarn.
The fabric manufacturers, apparel designers etc., have understood the strength and weakness of the ring spun yarn.
Also they have adopted their product process parameters well suited to Ring yarn.
Our Production Team has been working hard on optimizing the process to obtain desired quality levels with continuous support from Muratec. New technologies need close Team Work to succeed.
It requires enormous amount of energy to market the Air VORTEX technology yarns and our Lucky marketing team is equipped with relevant product knowledge which is continuously updated by our R&D team which is functioning exclusively for developing Lopil - VORTEX products.

Could you summarize the VORTEX spinning technology's contribution? Air VORTEX technology is th
Mr. Devadas

Air VORTEX technology is the future of spinning with its enormous energy saving potential throughout the manufacturing process from spinning (35% in Units per kg of yarn compared to ring spinning), quick wicking & drying, lower dyestuff requirement due to better exhaustion, low lint shedding, smart garment appearance & natural crease resistance due to higher bending modulus, longer garment life etc.
Lower garment rejections due to better yarn quality, Climate change concerns will soon make garment labeling (Carbon Foot Print) mandatory with details on ’energy and water’ consumption per garment and VORTEX Yarns score over Ring Yarns in this ‘Green’ initiative.
Textile business has to align towards global goal of climate change control like automobile and energy sectors for which VORTEX technology is for sure a cutting edge technology
